Just got back from my first solo vacation to Club Med. Many people are often afraid of traveling alone for fear of sitting around with nothing to do. I'm here to tell you it can be a wonderful experience and want to share my top three tips for traveling alone.
Tip #1 - your trip is what you make of it. At Club Med, they had activities all day long and well into the night. Traveling alone means you can do whatever it is you want to do. So go try new things! Find group activities, play beach volleyball, go snorkeling, go to shows and parties. You won't regret it.
Tip #2 - talk to EVERYONE. Some will talk to you, some will say hello and keep walking. JUST LIKE WHEN YOU ARE IN YOUR HOMETOWN. Shy? Try talking to the staff first. Their job is to be friendly and make sure you are having fun. That should give you confidence to talk to other people there. Wondering what to say? Ask them if they have been here before. If they have, ask them what is the one or two things you should do while you are there. There may be things you never considered that seem very interesting. If it is the first time at the destination, how did they decide to book this vacation? Once people know you are traveling alone, you will be amazed at how many invite you to join them at dinner and other activities. Remember as the old saying goes - strangers are just friends you haven't met yet.
Tip #3 - Bring a watch. Often, cell coverage is poor in tropical resorts outside the US and internet is a separate charge. My phone was a paperweight for the entire time. At Club Med, there were two clocks in the entire facility and they were located at the front desk. Want to snorkel at 10 AM? Or catch the show at 9 PM? Watches come in handy.
Hopefully this helps you get over the fear of traveling by yourself and you see how fun and relaxing a solo vacation can be. So get out and explore!
